Size-Inclusive Activewear Brands That Embrace Body Diversity

For far too long society’s obsession with size has translated to how clothes are manufactured and marketed to the masses, and it is reflected within the fitness market. Women’s activewear lines either have a limited collection for plus size options or there is a complete omission of sizes that are representative of the population. Thanks to the digital age we are living in, brands are now listening to the frustrations of many consumers and often times their hands are forced to fill the void of size inclusivity.

The fitness industry has historically shown one body type (thin and/or muscular) as being fit, which is not indicative of one’s health. Women’s Health Magazine recently made the decision to replace fitness models with readers of all shapes and sizes for their “15 Minute Workout” column. Activewear brands are following suit with expanding their brands to be inclusive at inception.

The body positivity and size inclusion movement has not only empowered women to accept themselves, but to hold companies accountable for lack of diversity and inclusion within the fashion industry.  Shopping for activewear shouldn’t have to be as intense as your workout, so here are a few size-inclusive activewear brands that embrace women of all shapes.

JustFab partnered with actress Kate Hudson to launch this high quality affordable line in 2013 and expanded the line (due to customer feedback) to be size-inclusize for all collections in 2017. Fabletics features sizes ranging from XXS-3X, bold colors and designs, and activewear for yoga, running, and more. The brand follows the same model as JustFab where selections are curated based your brief style quiz.  As a VIP member you receive 40-50% off of retail prices, free shipping over $49.95, and more. You can opt to shop as a guest without committing to a membership.

Model Candice Huffine created Day/Won to combine her love her fashion and sports. She has been an advocate for self confidence and acceptance and body diversity. The collection boasts leggings and tanks up to size 32 and will expand in the future to include sports bras.

Superfit Hero

Superfit Hero is an ethically manufactured brand that delivers activewear for all workouts and promotes body positivity. The line is designed by athletes and ranges from XS-4XL, retails from $10-$98, and includes leggings, t-shirts and tank tops. For the new year, they are running a #newfitspo campaign to counter the negative inspiration memes on social media.  The campaign seeks to redefine what fitness inspiration looks like and to empower women in the process.

GabiFresh Launches 2018 Resort Collection with Swimsuits For All

Fashion blogger, designer, and champion of body inclusivity Gabi Gregg (GabiFresh) has launched a resort line with Swimsuits For All. The collection’s campaign “Power of Survival” features Gabi, model and philanthropist, Philomena Kwao, and breast cancer survivor and activist, Ericka Hart.  Shot in the jungles of Belize, the campaign seeks to empower women to remove any fear when wearing any item of clothing.  Coming off the heels of the #MeToo movement, this campaign is timely and pushes the conversation of body positivity and breaking the barriers of shame that women face based on their attire.

“This collection is inspired by powerful women and features bold designs, so I really wanted the imagery to reflect that. Philomena and Ericka are both gorgeous with inspirational stories—they truly embody how I want my swimsuits to make people feel,” says GabiFresh. “I hope this campaign helps women realize they deserve to feel good about themselves in swimwear, regardless of size, shape, race or circumstance.”

The Limited has re-emerged and it is better than ever! It’s safe to say we were all devastated when the brand announced that it was closing its 250 stores earlier this year due to bankruptcy. Belk, Inc. acquired The Limited and announced that the women’s label debuted in 150 Belk stored across the nation and will be expanding to an additional 74 stores in 2018.

“The Limited provides customers with tailored, feminine looks to seamlessly carry the modern woman from work to her social life,” said Nadine Rauer, Belk Executive Vice President and General Merchandise Manager. “We’re committed to not only delivering the products that The Limited is known for, but also expanding the assortment to take this iconic brand to the next level.”
