Online Retailers That Let You Try Before Buying


Want your living room or bedroom to be your fitting room? Well this has become a reality with more retailers adapting the “try before you buy” model. Let’s face it, the retail industry has been experiencing a steady decline of sales throughout the years and brick & mortars will soon be a thing of the past. Retail giant Amazon has blazed the trail for being a one stop shop that provides the ultimate convenience with services like Prime Air, so having the full shopping experience in the comfort of your own home now seems like the natural thing to do.

While some retailers offer the “try before you buy” model completely complimentary, others will allow you to do so with a monthly subscription or a small fee per order, which can be applied to items you keep! This new wave of shopping is definitely worth bypassing long lines, crowded stores, and the commute.


Amazon Prime Wardrobe

Although not the first retailer to offer this service, Amazon has jumped on board with allowing consumers to try items before purchasing for Prime members.  Select at least three items ranging from clothes to accessories for men, women, & children, and you will have seven days to make a decision. Shipping and returns are free and you only pay for what you keep.  Prime Wardrobe is currently in beta and by invitation only, but you can sign up to receive notification of the launch, which hopefully will be soon! was ahead of its time with its launch two years ago.  Try is a Google Chrome extension that allows you to shop any online store and try their items at home for a week before committing.  There is an annual commitment of $49, but the service provides a 14-day free trial period.

Bungalow Clothing

Co-founded by John Legend, this personal styling service for women provides a curated selection based on your style profile. Featuring higher end brands such as Mother, Paige, Joie, and more, stylists will select latest trends to be delivered to your doorstep with no upfront fees for your first order (each order contains 6-15 items). Every subsequent order will have just an $8 styling fee. Try on the items for up to 5 days and pay for the items you keep.

Stitch Fix

Stitch Fix delivers a personalized shopping experience for men and women based on your style. A $20 styling fee is charged with each order which contains five hand picked items from your personal stylist.  Should you choose to buy all five items, you will receive 25% on your purchase. Stitch Fix sets itself apart by offering maternity, plus & petite size options.

Warby Parker

Warby Parker offers a wide range of stylish frames that you can try out at home for 5 days without any commitment. Simply take a short quiz to determine what frames will best fit your face, and you are sent five with demo lenses for free. If you love a pair, Warby Parker will then request your prescription to being the process for your new glasses where pricing starts at $95.
